 CRD Regional Trails Surveys
CRD Regional Parks is conducting a public survey this summer to gather information on regional trail use, experiences and management.  The information will provide insight into the public's views on the management and development of the Galloping Goose, Lochside and E&N Rail Trail - Humpback Connector regional trails.  This will provide background information for the development of a regional trails management plan in the future.

 

Junk It Kits
The kits are now available at Colwood City Hall at no charge while quantities last.  For more information, please click here.  The Junk It Kits include everything you need to safely and properly dispose of your unwanted items - tarp, bungee cord, information on where and how to dispose of materials and even a myrecyclopedia.ca pencil that will remind you every time you use it - all enclosed in a bag that can also be used as a flag.

Is Colwood Prepared for Emergencies?
A team from Royal Roads University Master of Arts in Disaster and Emergency Management has completed a comprehensive evaluation of our city's preparedness for a large scale emergency. Their results recommend Colwood be a 'Role Model City' in the United Nations Making Cities Resilient campaign - a distinction achieved by only 6 other communities in Canada!
Exercise Trident Fury
From May 3 to 19 the Royal Canadian Navy, the Royal Canadian Air Force, and the Canadian Army will be participating in a training event called Exercise Trident Fury. There may be patrol aircraft, alpha jets, helicopters and transport aircraft flying over our area periodically on missions during the day or at night. The exercise has been designed by military planners to minimize noise and other disruptions. Construction on the new secondary school in Royal Bay is expected to start August 1st, 2013. It's slated to open to students in September 2015. Call for Volunteers:  Taking the Pulse of Shorebird Populations
Recent studies suggest that many once abundant species of shorebirds are in decline.  A hemispheric effort is being undertaken to elucidate the causes.  As part of this Bird Studies Canada and Simon Fraser University are studying the migration of the Western Sandpiper.  Read Taking the Pulse of Shorebird Populations.

Report Knotweed in the CRD
Knotweed, listed as one of the world’s worst invaders, has arrived in the CRD.  Public assistance is needed to eliminate Knotweed in our region before it has spread too far.  The Capital Region Invasive Species Partnership (CRISP) has developed a regional program for this species.  Please visit the website for information and reporting: www.coastalinvasiveplants.com (Regional Committee tab: CRISP) or call 250-857-2472.
 
Coburg Peninsula Study
Four students from Camosun College have conducted a study of the vulnerability of Coburg Peninsula (Esquimalt Lagoon) to sea level rise. Results show that parts of the foreshore are already subject to erosion during ‘king’ tides and storm surge events, and that predicted sea level rise will increase this risk. Read their report 
 
Colwood 2012 Strategic Priorities
At the June 25, 2012 Council Meeting, the Colwood 2012 Strategic Priorities Chart was approved. This document will be posted in the Council Chambers and will be reconsidered by Council at least once each quarter for a status update so that they – and the public – can monitor where the City stands with respect to achieving its stated objectives.
