Are you eligible to vote in the 2022 Local Government Elections for Mayor and Council? Is your name on the current list of electors? If you are not sure, you can find out by calling or visiting your local government office during regular offices hours, Monday to Friday excluding statutory holidays). Advance elector registrations will be accepted at your local government office until Tuesday, August 23, 2022. Elector registrations will not be accepted during the period August 24 to October 15, 2022, but will be accepted on voting days. Electors who live in or own property in the Town of View Royal and qualify as either a resident elector or non-resident elector must register at advance voting opportunities or on general voting day as the Town does not use a list of electors.
To register, resident electors must produce 2 pieces of identification (at least one with a signature). Picture identification is not necessary. The identification must prove both residency and identity. To register, non-resident property electors must produce 2 pieces of identification (at least one with a signature) to prove identity, proof that they are entitled to register in relation to the property.
Elector qualifications
Resident electors:
- 18 years of age or older on general voting day for the election or assent voting; and
- a Canadian citizen; and
- a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration; and
- a resident of the municipality you are voting in; and
- not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or assent voting and not otherwise disqualified by law.
Non-resident property electors:
- 18 years of age or older on general voting day for the election or assent voting; and
- a Canadian citizen; and
- a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration; and
- a registered owner of real property in the municipality you are voting in for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration; and
- the only persons who are registered owners of the property, either as joint tenants or tenants in common, are individuals who are not holding the property in trust for a corporation or another trust; and
- not entitled to register as a resident elector; and
- not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or assent voting and not otherwise disqualified by law; and
- if there is more than one registered owner of the property, only one of those individuals may, with the written consent of the majority of the owners, register as a non-resident property elector.
List of registered electors
Beginning Tuesday, August 30, 2022, until the close of general voting for the election on Saturday, October 15, 2022, a copy of the list of registered electors will be available for public inspection, at your local government office during regular office hours, Monday to Friday (excluding statutory holidays).
Before inspecting the list, a person must sign a statement that they will not inspect the list, make copies, or use the information included in the list except for the purposes of Part 3 – Electors and Elections of the Local Government Act.
These provisions do not apply to the Town of View Royal as View Royal does not use a list of registered electors.
Request to omit or obscure
An elector may request that their address or other personal information about them be omitted from or obscured on the list of electors. The elector must contact the Chief Election Officer or the Deputy Election Officer to make this request. This provision does not apply to Town of View Royal as View Royal does not use a list of electors.
Objection to registration of an elector
An objection to the registration of a person whose name appears on the list of registered electors may be made in accordance with the Local Government Act until 4:00 pm on Friday, September 9, 2022. An objection must be in writing and an objection may only be made by a person entitled to be registered as an elector of the above listed municipalities, and only on the basis that a person whose name appears on the list of electors has died or is not qualified to register as an elector of that municipality. This provision does not apply to the Town of View Royal as View Royal does not use a list of electors.
