The City of Colwood has earned a BC Active Transportation Infrastructure Grant in the amount of $119,432 to install new cycling and pedestrian counters in key locations around Colwood. The counters will provide valuable data about how cyclists, mobility devices, and pedestrians are using active transportation routes in Colwood to inform transportation planing and ongoing investment in active transportation improvements.

How will the counters help?

Colwood is actively constructing new sidewalks and cycling routes in two locations, with five more projects in the final stages of design. At the same time, the City is engaging residents in the creation of a comprehensive Active Transportation Network Plan to guide ongoing improvements.

The new counters will provide data about things like:

  • the number of pedestrians and cyclists using these routes
  • where users are making connections between routes
  • whether users are choosing to travel through commercial areas on the way
  • if certain routes are used more by midday cyclists or rush-hour commuters
  • how seasons or construction zones affect people's routes or travel choices

.All together, this data will sharpen the City's understanding of what connections or improvements are most likely to support more residents to choose active transportation through Colwood.

Data from all of the new Colwood counters will be publicly available through the regional CRD Eco-Counter website. In some locations, Colwood counters will display real-time data and other helpful information to encourage use of the City's growing active transportation network.

Why is encouraging active transportation important?

Making active transportation a realistic option for people is one way to support the mental and physical health of residents, reduce carbon pollution to move us toward our clean energy, climate and community resilience goals, improve safety and accessibility, and support local tourism and economic prosperity.
