A concrete pump truck at a Colwood worksite tipped over onto its side Wednesday morning, narrowly missing a single-family house under construction.

Colwood Fire Rescue was called to the 500-block of Elevation Pointe Terrace, in south Colwood, about 11:40 a.m. Wednesday. When the crew arrived, they found a concrete pump truck on its passenger side with its boom extended.

While the house under construction was not hit, the boom did strike a vehicle.

“By the time we arrived, the lone occupant of the vehicle had self-extricated,” said Fire Chief Bryan Erwin.

The operator of the pump truck was attended to by B.C. Ambulance Service paramedics.

A WorkSafe B.C. officer attended the scene early Wednesday afternoon, and an investigation is underway.

WorkSafe B.C. received a total of 24 injury claims involving concrete pump trucks in 2022, down from 43 in 2019.

The name of the company that the concrete pumping truck was registered to has not been disclosed.

A public works crew from the City of Colwood cleaned up concrete that had spilled into a nearby storm drain.

John Russell, deputy director of public works for the City of Colwood, said in such cases a hydro-vac truck is used to remove as much concrete as possible and the lines are inspected to make sure the material does not spread farther in the system.
