It's about to get easier to walk and cycle in and around Colwood

After working through several stages of permitting, work is set to begin on a new pedestrian and cycling bridge connecting the Galloping Goose Regional Trail over Sooke Road in Colwood.

Construction will begin Wednesday, March 26, 2025 on the underground utilities while the site access and project footprint is prepared. Work will progress through the estimated 32 week construction timeline, targeting full project completion in advance of the 2026 grant funding deadline.

A detour will be in place for trail users walking or cycling between Wale Road and the Belmont Bridge behind Colwood Corners for from March 26 to October 31, 2025.

The City received a grant of $3.6M from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure program for the new pedestrian and cycling overpass, with reserve funding set aside to cover the remaining project costs.

An uninterrupted route for pedestrians and cyclists

Currently, trail users must detour along Wale Road and Island Highway, waiting to cross at the light, then travelling up the sidewalk to rejoin the trail. Adding to confusion is a small section of trail that cuts across from Wale Road to the Highway, but ends there with no safe crossing.

Recent upgrades to the trail crossing on Wale Road will smooth the approach along the trail directly to the bridge, creating a safe and seamless connection from Wale Road to the trailhead near the Colwood Park & Ride.

About the Galloping Goose Regional Trail in Colwood

The Galloping Goose Regional Trail is a picturesque multi-use trail that runs through the heart of Colwood as it follows the old railway line on its 55km journey from Victoria to Sooke.

The trail, which is owned and maintained by the Capital Regional District, attracts thousands of users every day.  From March 1, 2024 to March 1, 2025 a total of 270,077 pedestrians and cyclists have passed the automated counter on the Galloping Goose Regional Trail near Wale Road.

The new Colwood gateway bridge will allow for a safe, seamless connection that encourages more residents and visitors to travel in and around Colwood on foot or by bike, supporting the City's goals for improved health and well being, easing traffic congestion, improving air quality, and reducing our climate impact.
