Colwood is sprucing up cul-de-sacs and inviting residents to get involved in caring for them

We know Colwood residents take pride in their yards and their neighbourhoods, and that cul-de-sacs in particular tend to foster a sense of community among the neighbours who live there. Because they are low-traffic by nature, cul-de-sacs are more than streets: they provide unique opportunities for play and social connection, as well as beautiful plantings.

Following a workshop to fine-tune boulevard planting methods and get their creativity flowing, the Parks team has new cul-de-sac planting plans that will add beauty to neighbourhoods. As they prepare to plant up some of the City’s cul-de-sacs they are introducing a new “Care for your Colwood cul-de-sac” program to engage residents in helping keep beds looking great while fostering connections between neighbours and promoting community pride.

For participating neighbours, the Colwood Parks Team will plant up the beds with beautiful, easy-care native plantings that add colour and fragrance, and that attract beneficial pollinator insects and birds. The team will then provide a brief orientation so that neighbours can spend a little time caring for the garden together throughout the seasons.

Here's how the "Care for your Colwood cul-de-sac" program works:

  • A resident or group of neighbours completes a brief Application Form [PDF/211KB] and sends it to gbeauvillier@colwood.ca to start the process.
  • The Colwood Parks team gets in touch to make arrangements and then prepares the cul-de-sac garden bed and plants it according to one of Colwood's cul-de-sac planting plans.
  • The Parks team provides participating neighbours with a brief orientation and a checklist for the care and maintenance of the cul-de-sac garden.
  • Neighbours spend a little time each week tending to the garden.
  • The checklist includes contact information for the Colwood Parks team when questions arise about caring for the cul-de-sac garden.
  • The Parks team will schedule annual visits to replenish the soil, assess plant health, and check in with neighbours to assist as needed.
