Completion of the City of Colwood’s Latoria Roundabout project has been delayed until December due to the addition of BC Hydro upgrades to the project.
In a news release, the city said the project will now miss its originally planned fall completion, and landscaping and finishing details will not be complete until spring 2024.
The addition of BC Hydro upgrades came from the recognition the area is set to see significant expansion in the coming years, with large new facilities like the Royal BC Museum Collection and Archives Building being built.
The city said in its release that BC Hydro upgrades would be required to accommodate that growth, and the decision was made to conduct that work while the roadway was already under construction to avoid having to rip up paved road soon after completion.
Work in partnership with the provincial and federal governments to protect Latoria Creek during project construction is also a factor in the delay, according to the city.
The new timeline will see BC Hydro upgrades, underground utilities and drainage infrastructure work, pond works and roadbed widening take place in September, with hydro work completed in October along with the start of concrete forming and pouring for curbs and sidewalks.
November will see preparatory work for paving, which is expected to take place and be completed in December, allowing the new roundabout to open to traffic.
